Kettering University has appointed Dr. Scott Grasman, Dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science, to serve as Acting Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, effective Oct. 5.

Dr. Scott Grasman Visits with students in Kettering University's Learning CommonsGrasman joined Kettering in 2017 as a professor and later served as head of the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering before becoming interim dean and, in December 2022, dean of the College.

“Scott understands the academic operation of this University from inside it. I have watched him lead a College well. He carries my full confidence into this role,” said Kettering University President Dr. Robert K. McMahan.

Before joining Kettering, Grasman spent six years as a professor and department head of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology and the previous 10 years in the Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology. He earned bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan.

“Taking on the role of Acting Provost, my first priority is to support the people who make Kettering special, our students, faculty and staff, and to ensure that our academic enterprise continues to deliver on the promise of a Kettering education,” Grasman said. “My experiences as a faculty member, department head and dean have taught me the value of listening, building trust and bringing people together around a shared purpose.”

While serving as Kettering’s Acting Provost, Grasman will also continue to lead the College of Engineering and Computer Science.

“The charge I have given him is continuity. The academic year is under way. The Co-op cycle does not pause for a leadership transition,” McMahan said. “Students should not be able to detect one in their term. If they cannot, it will be because the staff of Academic Affairs made sure of it.”

A national search for the permanent Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost is underway. Finalists will visit campus later this year for meetings with faculty and staff. The search is confidential, and candidates will not be identified before the finalist visits. Faculty and staff will have an opportunity to participate in those visits as the University identifies its next permanent academic leader.
