Preparing to Transfer

Yes! Schedule a visit for a personalized tour, Bulldog for a Day (shadow a current student), or one of our Preview or Discover days. Group visits are also an option upon request.

At the undergraduate level, Kettering offers six engineering majors, computer science, business management, and a recently approved accelerated Bachelor of Science in Semiconductor Materials and Devices. We also have an accelerated bachelor’s to master’s pathway. Find a program that fuels your future ambition here.

A completed associate's degree is not required to transfer. However, students transferring to Kettering from another college or university should be taking 14 to 16 credits per semester of coursework similar to what is being taken by a Kettering University student.

Because most courses at Kettering require a strong background in calculus-based math, coursework in trigonometry, pre-calculus, and/or calculus should be completed successfully in preparation for transfer.

We evaluate each application holistically to ensure that a student is prepared for the rigors of a Kettering education. Some students may need to complete recommended science and math courses before transferring to ensure proper academic preparation for Kettering. We may request to view your high school transcript as well.

Kettering University is test-optional for all students. Students may submit SAT/ACT score(s) if they feel it will benefit their standing in the admissions review process. Students who choose not to submit standardized testing scores will not be negatively impacted during the review process.

For more questions about admissions requirements, schedule an appointment with our Associate Director of Transfer Admissions.

Future transfer students, as well as Dual-Enrolled and Early/Middle College students, can schedule an appointment with our Associate Director of Transfer Admissions or use the tools on the transfer page, such as the Transfer Planning Guides or Degree Works tool.

How to Apply

A transfer student is defined as someone who has earned college credit after their high school graduation date. Dual-enrolled and Early / Middle College students will therefore apply as first-year students. Applicable credits will still transfer upon receipt of official transcripts.

For the application, please submit unofficial transcripts from all colleges/universities attended, including a list of any courses in progress. Additional information, such as high school transcripts, may be requested if you have completed fewer than 24 college credit hours. Final official transcripts will be required prior to enrollment.

We recommend that transfer students apply at least two months prior to their desired start date (terms start each year in July, October, January, and April). This provides sufficient time for processing, financial aid, and final enrollment steps.

Apply here, using the Kettering application or the CommonApp for Transfer. There is a short essay required; submit unofficial transcripts from all colleges/universities attended, including a list of courses in progress. Additional information, such as high school transcripts, may be requested if you have completed fewer than 24 credit hours or if the admissions committee needs additional information. Final official transcripts will be required prior to enrollment.

PTK members should upload a copy of their membership certificate or be sure it is listed on their transcript.

I'm Admitted. What's Next?

Transfer students must complete three to five successful Co-op terms, depending on how many credits transfer to Kettering. You will alternate between three months in academics and three months in paid Co-op work experiences.

Upon admission to Kettering, the Co-op and Career Design team provides support through three annual Co-op employment fairs, resume and job coaching assistance, resume referral to companies, and access to the Kettering Connect system, where employers post Co-op employment opportunities. If you have additional questions, schedule an appointment with our Associate Director of Transfer Admissions.

A $300 enrollment deposit secures your spot at Kettering. This will be credited toward your first academic term’s tuition bill. You can deposit at kettering.edu/deposit.

Admitted students will be contacted with the results of an official credit evaluation after submitting a $300 enrollment deposit and receipt of all final, official transcripts. However, a self-assessment using the Degree Works Tool will provide dependable results with very few exceptions. Schedule an appointment to review your results with our Associate Director of Transfer Admissions.

Once you have deposited and your final official transcripts have been evaluated, the Academic Success Center will create your first academic term schedule for you. This is usually finalized a week or two before the start of the term. There will also be a virtual Student Orientation and Academic Registration (SOAR) session prior to your start date, with general information to help you get started.

Once you have completed your FAFSA and any Kettering scholarship applications, your final financial aid package will be sent to you and available in your Banner Student Self-Service.

All incoming students are required to live on campus for their first two academic terms, unless they meet one or more of the following documented criteria:

  • be 21 years of age or older prior to the last day of classes of the term;
  • have previously lived two terms in a residence hall (at a college/university);
  • are married;
  • have child(ren) in residence with legal custody or guardianship.

The link for the housing application and release form will be available once a student deposits. For students eligible for a housing release, there are many housing options available near campus.

Previous Kettering undergraduate students may request to be readmitted by contacting the Academic Success Center. An advisor in the ASC will discuss and assist with the Application for Readmission and any stipulations that may apply to them. Contact academicsuccess@kettering.edu
