Professor of Social Science

Professor Callahan started at Kettering in 1995.  He is an honorary member of the Robot Honor Society and the Faculty Advisor for the Kettering University Model United Nations (KUMUN).  Professor Callahan is also a recipient of the Outstanding New Researcher Award, the Outstanding Researcher Award, the Outstanding Teaching Award, and the Rodes Professorship.  He is currently writing his fourth book.  It covers the history of the League of Nations, Britain, and chemical weapons, 1919-1940.  It aims to examine the intersection of international organization, science and technology, law and morality, and diplomacy.

Dr. Callahan is the author of Mandates and Empire: The League of Nations and Africa, 1914-1931 and A Sacred Trust: The League of Nations and Africa, 1929-1946; and a co-editor of Imperialism on Trial: International Oversight of Colonial Rule in Historical Perspective.  An essay, “The League of Nations and the Problems of Health and the Environment:  Leadership for the Common Good in Historical Perspective,” appears in Benjamin W. Redekop, ed., Leadership for Environmental Sustainability.  His latest book, The League of Nations, International Terrorism, and British Foreign Policy, 1934-1938, was published in 2018.  He is currently writing a book on the history of the League of Nations, Britain, and chemical weapons, 1919-1940.  It aims to examine the intersection of international organization, science and technology, law and morality, and diplomacy.
