Commencement Speaker

Latondra Newton is a 1991 graduate of Kettering University.Latondra Newton ’91, Senior Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer of The Walt Disney Company, will deliver the Kettering University Commencement Address on June 16.

Newton has served in her current role since February of 2017. She leads the The Walt Disney Company’s strategic diversity and inclusion initiatives, which help Disney and its employees around the world tell stories that entertain, enlighten and inspire. She partners with all the company’s segments and leaders to build on Disney’s commitment to produce entertainment that reflects a global audience and sustain a welcoming and inclusive workplace for everyone.

Prior to joining Disney, Newton was Group Vice President, Social Innovation and Chief Diversity Officer, Toyota Motor North America, Inc. and Chief Program Officer, Toyota Mobility Foundation, Toyota Motor Corporation.

Student Speaker

Gabrielle Scott is a 2018 graduate of Kettering University

Gabrielle Scott ’18 learned to push herself out of her comfort zone as a student at Kettering University. She will share insights from her journey as the student speaker at Kettering University’s Commencement Ceremony on June 16.

“I was so excited to be chosen to speak,” Scott said. “I feel like my message will resonate. I’m trying to make it relatable to everyone.” 

Scott, who is from Houston, Texas, and later moved to Flint where she graduated from International Academy of Flint, is graduating with a Business degree. She had co-op placements with Irvin Automotive and Beaumont Health and hopes to go into supply chain management after graduating.

Quick Information

  • Commencement is in the Connie and Jim John Recreation Center 
  • No tickets required to attend Commencement, however, each graduate is limited to 8 guests
  • The event is free
  • Allow 2 1/2 hours for the ceremony 
  • Presiding - Kettering University President Robert McMahan
  • Grand Marshal - Faculty Senate Moderator Professor Joe Salacuse
  • Parking is free and available in all campus parking lots 
  • Formal processional begins at 11 am

Graduates and Faculty Information

  • There is no graduation rehearsal
  • Graduates must report to the Great Court between 9 and 10 a.m. to check in
  • Graduates assemble in the tunnel between 10:30 and 10:50 a.m. to line up
  • Faculty and staff assemble for the Processional between 10-10:45 a.m. in the third floor, Recreation Center

Directions to the University

Handicapped/Disabled access to the Rec Center for June 16 Commencement Ceremony

  • Handicapped Parking is available at the South-East corner on the Rec Center.
    They should enter the Rec Center at the South-East door, lower level.
  • There is reserved seating & a sign pointing to Handicapped Seating, and the
    ushers all know about this area.
  • Just speak to an usher.

Additional Parking

Kettering University has additional parking at the lot behind Atwood Stadium off of University Avenue. Off of University Avenue, turn south on Stone Street where the Kettering University parking signs will direct you. At the end of Stone street, turn right and you will be in the parking lot.

Free shuttles are standing by to deliver our guests to the Recreation Center. Shuttle vehicles will be clearly marked and will be on duty during and after the reception to return guests to their vehicles.
