Roar of Thunder

Oct 19, 2010

Kettnetic Thunder, Kettering's Ultimate Frisbee team, placed seventh in the first annual "ThunderStorm" tournament.

The Kettnetic Thunder, Kettering University’s Ultimate Frisbee team, gained valuable experience at the first tournament the school has ever hosted, finishing seventh at the ‘ThunderStorm 2010’ Oct. 16.

The team went winless in pool play, and then lost their first game of the round robin style tournament before winning the seventh/eighth place game over Aquinas.

Heading into "ThunderStorm," team members were hoping to gain some game experience for the younger players and be competitive against some of the top competition in the state.

“In the preseason, we’re just trying to get the team together, finalize the roster and get some good experience,” said Ken Kaminski, the team’s head captain.

The team got better as the day progressed, playing its best game in a 16-15 loss to Kalamazoo’s Y team in the 5th/6th place bracket.
Calvin College won the championship. Here were the final standings: 1. Calvin; 2. Kalamazoo X; 3. Central Michigan; 4. Michigan State; 5. Kalamazoo Y; 6. Alma; 7. Kettering; 8. Aquinas.

The purpose of the Kettnetic Thunder is to give students and spectators in one of the fastest growing sports on college campuses.
“We hope to get a lot more people interested,” Kaminski said. “It (the tournament) was a good way to show the team, the staff and others what ultimate is all about.”

The game features 7-on-7 action that incorporates skills from several different sports. “It’s a combination,” Kaminski said. “There’s the throwing of football, the speed of soccer, some of the agility and movements of basketball. It’s an exciting game for spectators to watch.”

The team is currently practicing right now. The regular season starts in January and runs through April.
