Major Sobey Memorial Golf Outing
Supporting the Distinguished Alumni Scholarship Award and remembering Kettering/GMI's first president Albert Sobey, the Sobey Golf Outing marks it's 18th year.
The 18th annual Major Sobey Memorial Golf Outing will be Friday, June 4, at Greystone Golf Club and Twin Lakes Golf & Swim Club in Rochester, Mich., sponsored by the Kettering/GMI Alumni Association and the Office of Enrollment Management.
Named for Kettering/GMI's first president, Major Albert Sobey, the outing benefits the Distinguished Alumni Scholarship Award, developed to attract highly qualified students with demonstrated outstanding academic performance to Kettering.
Sobey earned the nickname "the Major" because it took several weeks for his clothing to find him after his discharge from the Army in World War I. This required him to wear his uniform around campus in his position as the first director of the new Industrial Fellowship League's Institute. The Institute eventually evolved into General Motors Institute, now Kettering University.
The Golf outing honors his contributions to the university from 1919 through 1950 by providing scholarship money for more than 26 students in the past 18 years.
Reservations at either Greystone or Twin Lakes, or sponsorships, can be made by calling Rhonda Sullivan at 810-762-7434 or via e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org. Participants will enjoy 18 holes of golf, lunch on the course, a buffet dinner, awards ceremony and an automobile prize for the first hole in one contest.
