Kettering University gains access to Lynda.com courses

Lynda opens up resources for all students to learn subjects regardless of their major.”

The Library at Kettering University, in partnership with Information Technology, has acquired LyndaCampus for faculty, staff and students on campus.

Lynda is an online resources that offers over 5,800 courses in business, technology and creative skills taught by industry experts. Lynda is owned and operated by LinkedIn.“Most students on co-op terms have been anxious for a resource like Lynda.com,” said Eddie Schodowski ‘17. “Lynda opens up resources for all students to learn subjects regardless of their major. I'm expecting to see Mechanical Engineering students building mobile apps more frequently thanks to Lynda and realizing that they don't have to major in Computer Science to build great software.”

In addition to learning new skills, Lynda will also help Kettering students bridge the gap between their own knowledge and the modern demands of their co-op employers. Schodowski cites the mastery of Microsoft Excel as an example of a concrete skill that incoming high school students may lack but co-op employers deem valuable. Through Lynda, Kettering students can now get professional training from experts in Excel to match their skills to the co-op employer’s needs.

Schodowski feels that access to Lynda gives Kettering students a competitive advantage over their peers at other institutions because the resources complement the challenges students face during co-op terms.

“There hasn't really been access to a good resource to learn these skills across every co-op employer until Kettering got Lynda access,” Schodowski said. “Now students can learn professional skills quickly on their own, regardless of where they work, and easily become strong contributors over their co-op careers which can help them get more responsibility on bigger tasks.”
