Dana Corp. CEO joins trustees
Michael J. Burns '75 is newest member of the Board of Trustees.
The CEO and president of the Dana Corporation has been appointed to the Kettering University Board of Trustees. Michael J. Burns, a 1975 graduate of Kettering University, will serve a three-year term.
Burns is chairman of the board, chief executive officer, and president of the Dana Corporation, one of the world's leading vehicular suppliers, with headquarters in Toledo, Ohio. He came to Dana in March 2004 from General Motors Corp., where he had most recently served as president of General Motors Europe, a $25 billion division based in Zurich, Switzerland. Burns was born in Monticello, Ind., on March 1, 1952. He earned a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Kettering in 1975 and a master's degree in Business Administration from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1979.
His 34-year General Motors career began with various positions in operations, engineering, administration, and sales before he moved to GM Singapore in 1981 as operations manager for Delco Electronics. In 1985, he joined the GM Treasurer's Office in New York and was subsequently promoted to director, Overseas Financial Analysis, in 1987. Later that year, he returned to Delco Electronics where he was in charge of hybrid electronics operations. In 1988, he was named plant manager, Hybrid and Semiconductor Operations, and, in 1990, he became director of Body and Chassis Electronics. He was named vice president of the Vehicle Systems business unit of Delco Electronics Corporation in 1993 and GM vice president responsible for Delphi Harrison Thermal Systems in Lockport, N.Y., in 1994. In 1996, he was named GM vice president and general manager of Delphi Delco Electronics Systems. In 1998, Mike was named president of GM Europe, where he was in charge of the overall coordination of Opel/Vauxhall, Saab, GM Daewoo Europe, and GM's North American vehicle activities in Europe.
He is a member of the Business Roundtable, Business Council, National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). He has also served on the supervisory board of Adam Opel AG, and the board of directors of Saab Automobile AB, ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers Association), and the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce. He lives in Toledo, Ohio.
