The Child Welfare Society of Flint (CWS) awarded a $7,500 grant to Kettering University to support its Cybersecurity Pre-College Summer Program.

Students in ninth through 12th grade are eligible to attend the camp, which will be July 26-30 at the University. During the camp, students participate in hands-on team exercises to learn about encryption, email phishing and vehicle security. The grant money will offset the costs for students of Genesee County Schools to attend the camps, based on financial need.

“The Child Welfare Society of Flint voted unanimously to accept the grant request to help fund Kettering University’s Pre-College Computer Science Cybersecurity Program,” said Rosanne Heddy, President of the CWS Board. “The CWS believes it is important to make programs such as these available to the students in our community. We need to inspire fresh minds to learn about this growing industry. We are proud to partner with Kettering to give students exposure to this field.”

Since 1915, the Child Welfare Society of Flint has been quietly helping Genesee County youth at the Cedar Street Children’s Center. In 2013, CWS gifted the Cedar Street Children’s Center building and the surrounding grounds to the Shelter of Flint. The CWS is now a private foundation that operates to offer grants to organizations that assist families and children with educational, health and social needs. As a private foundation, CWS provides grants for programs and services that benefit youth in Genesee County.
