The Kettering University student SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) chapter will compete in the Formula SAE collegiate design competition at the Silverdome Thursday, May 16 through Sunday, May 19. Formula SAE challenges collegiate engineering students to conceive, design, fabricate and compete with compact formula-style racing cars. Engineering students from universities in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Japan, and the United Kingdom participate in this fierce competition.

Fresh off the practice track with Lyn St. James, the Kettering team is ready to to compete against 120 top schools in one of the most exciting college design competitions around. St. James, former record-setting Indy race car driver and Kettering Trustee, tutored eight members of the Kettering Formula SAE team in racing technique April 24, at Whiteland Raceway, near Indianapolis. The tutorial was designed to help improve driver skill among members of the team who will compete at the Silverdome. Every student had significantly improved lap times following the session.

Super power and excitement draw teams to this event each year. Restrictions are placed on the car frame and engine so the students' knowledge, creativity, and imagination are tested. Four-cycle engines up to 610cc can be turbocharged or supercharged to add a new dimension to the challenge of engine design.
