Ceremony Details

We are thrilled to have you join us for this exciting celebration! Tickets are required for entry to the Recreation Center. 

The Recreation Center will be open for guests to obtain seating beginning at 9:30 am. 

Seating

All black chairs in the Recreation Center are open seating for guests. Seating is first come, first served.

Accessible seating is reserved and will be marked with signage. One of our ushers would be happy to direct you to this location. Guests requiring this reserved seating should enter the facility on the lower level utilizing the South-East door.

Additional Information

Some things to keep in mind:

  • The ceremony lasts roughly 2 ½ hours. Please remain for the entire ceremony.
  • There will be two sections for graduate seating in the center of the seating area. Mechanical Engineering undergraduates will be seated on the left-hand side facing the main stage. All other undergraduate programs will be seated on the right-hand side behind the Master’s degree candidates.
  • Photographs are encouraged, though they are only allowed from your seat during the ceremony; there is no guest access to the stage area. Professional photographers will be onsite to capture photos of each graduate.
  • Guests are not permitted in the graduate assembly area or graduate seating area of the recreation center.
  • We do not allow balloons, banners, signs, noise makers or other disruptive items
  • Following the ceremony, graduates are directed outdoors to greet family and guests at our Commencement Reception. Please make arrangements with your student prior to the ceremony.

Commencement Timeline

  • 9-10 a.m. Report to the Sunset Room to check in and pick up your QR Code Card.
  • 10:30 a.m. Students line up in the tunnel
  • 10:55 a.m. March to 1st Floor of Recreation Center
  • 11 a.m. Formal Processional and Ceremony begins

Immediately following the ceremony there will be a complimentary reception for you, your family and friends.

Before the Ceremony

Graduates should report to the Sunset Room in the Campus Center one hour prior to the start of the ceremony to check in and pick up their QR Code Cord. This card will be scanned when you approach the stage. The registrar's office will be onsite to direct and assist graduates in lining up for the processional. When the ceremony is ready to begin, graduates will process to the first floor of the Recreation Center. 

We ask that purses, bags, coats, and other personal items be given to family or friends prior to the ceremony. Cell phones and electronic devices should be silenced or turned off prior to the start of the procession.

Regalia

Graduates are required to wear academic regalia when participating in the Kettering University Commencement ceremony. Academic regalia is available for purchase online with Jostens and will not be available onsite at Commencement.

Commencement is a milestone in your life and we welcome you to decorate your cap in honor of your hard work and dedication. Please take the following information into consideration as you decorate.

  • Only the flat, top portion of the mortarboard may be decorated. Nothing else should be decorated on the sides of the cap or on your academic gown.
  • Decorations should not make noise. No bells, horns, etc.
  • Avoid obscenities, profanity, vulgar or lewd remarks.
  • Elements of your design should lay as flat as possible to avoid obstructed views.

  • Biochemistry - Yellow
  • Business Administration - Drab
  • Chemical Engineering - Orange
  • Chemistry - Yellow
  • Computer Engineering - Orange
  • Computer Science - Yellow 
  • Electical Engineering - Orange
  • Engineering Physics - Orange
  • Industrial Engineering - Orange
  • Mehcanical Engineering - Orange

Graduate

  • Business Administration - Drab
  • Engineering -Orange
  • Engineering Management -Drab
  • Lean Manufacturing - Drab
  • Operations Management -Drab

Once received, we recommend immediately opening the package to hang your gown (and hood if applicable). This step will help to remove all wrinkles. Gowns may be steamed but cannot be pressed as it will damage the gown.

Honor Cords

Undergraduate student honor cords for Cum Laude (3.5 or higher) and Magna Cum Laude (3.7 or higher) will be handed out at the check in table prior to the commencement ceremony.  Summa Cum Laude (3.9 and higher) medals are distributed at a special ceremony prior to commencement.

Military honor cords will be handed out at the check in table prior to the commencement ceremony.

How to Wear Your Regalia

Cap and Gown

Your gown must be hooked at the collar and should remain hooked for the duration of wear. The cap (mortarboard) should we worn with the point in the front, approximately 1 inch about the eyebrows. The mortarboard should be level on your head with the tassel worn over the right temple.

Hoods (Graduate Students)

The cap (mortarboard) should we worn with the point in the front, approximately 1 inch about the eyebrows. The mortarboard should be level on your head with the tassel worn over the left temple.

Graduate students should not wear their hood prior to the ceremony as hooding is incorporated in the commencement ceremony. Graduate students will carry their hood over their arm as they approach the stage. 

Other Apparel

Shoes and other articles of visible apparel worn should be of dark colors that harmonize with academic dress. Nothing else should be worn on the academic gown.

The Ceremony

The ceremony will last approximately 2 ½ hours. The faculty marshal will signal you to stand, one row at a time to come forward to receive your diploma. You will walk to the stage and give your QR Code Card to the name reader. Once your name is called, walk forward across the stage to receive your diploma.

A photo will be taken as President McMahan personally presents your diploma. You will then return to your seat. Follow the direction of the faculty marshals for the recessional.

After the Ceremony

There will be a complimentary reception outside of the Recreation Center. Graduates should make arrangements with their guests to meet at a designated location outside of the Recreation Center after the ceremony has ended.

We appreciate the contributions our faculty make and encourage your participation in the commencement exercises. Faculty support for students at commencement is very meaningful. The following details will help to make commencement a success.

Regalia

Faculty participating in Commencement exercises are required to wear academic regalia while participating in the Kettering University ceremony. Regalia is available for purchase online with Jostens and will not be available onsite at Commencement. Please note orders must be placed by Thursday, May 9th, 2019 to guarantee arrival prior to commencement.

For faculty who already own regalia we do ask that your items are cleaned and/or pressed prior to Commencement on Saturday.
