Community Service

I am involved in Thanksgiving food collections and distribution activities in East Lansing that aid poor people. Also, I

am raising funds for college scholarships in East Lansing Cambodian Refuge Relief Activities.

11. External Programs Taught:

Helped develop and present a three-to-four hour weekly program to aid minority and disadvantaged nursing students in

the understanding of mathematical principles. (Program ran for 5 years at MSU.)

Helped develop and present a 60-hour program to aid forestry student in understanding mathematical principles for

students beginning graduate work 10 to 15 years after graduation.

12. Other Professional Activity:

Three grants for financial support were written during 1985:

1. Agency: U.S. Department of Energy

Title: Project on Engineering and Technology (a Pre-Engineering program)

Status: Rejected

2. Agency: U.S. Department of Education

Title: A Proposal to Aid Minority Women to Gain Admission to and Graduate from an Engineering and

Management College

Status: Rejected

Reason: Two or three of the guidelines were not addressed. Had insufficient information regarding all

guidelines.

3. Agency: Defense Department

Title: Chaos in Dynamical Systems

Status: Funded. Joint project with Shuie-Nee Chow, Tien-Yien Li, Byron Drachman, Steven W. Shaw,

Lionel M. Ni, and Lai-Sang Young, Michigan State.

Moderator at the Annual Coordination Conference, June 20, 1985

Topic: Pipeline Issues (Minorities from Kalamazoo Undergraduate)

Worked with GMI's N.S.B.E. Chapter in hosting Region IV N.S.B.E. Conference at the Hyatt Regency, November 1-3, 1985. (All funds for this conference were solicited from outside sources. No GMI funds were used. The program

was a success.)
