International History
Walter W. Ross founded Beta Sigma Phi on April 30, 1931 in Abilene, Kansas. This was during the Great Depression, and there was a need for an organization that allowed women to get together and socialize. The original name of this organization was The National What to Read Club. This club allowed for women to come together in a social, cultural and educational setting. The organization has spread to over 30 countries throughout the world. The Greek name Beta Sigma Phi means Life, Learning and Friendship, which is also our motto.
