Financial
How much does it cost?
Currently, the cost of dues is $250 per term. While this might sound expensive, this is actually quite low, compared to most fraternities and sororities. If you live in the apartments, the cost of your apartment rent is
approximately $1330 (which is comparable to living in the residence hall or off-campus). New member dues are approximately $450, which is a one-time payment that helps off-set the expense of initiation and national dues.
What are the financial obligations?
Your financial obligations are dues and rent or live-out fees (if applicable) after membership. This goes towards our housing, events, activities, insurance, and national dues.
Where does the money for dues go?
All Panhellenic sororities (which includes ASA and A Phi) owe money to nationals to keep their chapters active. The cost of dues also pays for our house composites, insurance, etc. Your new member dues will pay for your pledge pin, your member pin, your certificate and member card, your house letter shirt, and your dues for the term.
Membership Selection
What are the requirements to join?
You must show an active interest in the house and attend events. All new members are required to go through new member education before they are initiated.
How difficult is it to get in?
It is not difficult at all to get in. Just be yourself and find a house that is truly right for you. You must also have an 80 WAG and show continuous interest in the house.
Can sophomores or juniors join?
Of course! Female students of any year are free to join if WAG criteria is met.
New Member Program
What is the new member program like?
New members attend one hour per week for five weeks, in which topics such as: hazing, our creed, the constitution and by-laws, and other basic information about Alpha Phi are discussed and explained. You are not required to memorize information or take tests. However, your attendance is necessary.
Do you haze?
No, Alpha Phi does not haze. Hazing is prohibited by Panhel and Alpha Phi International.
When is initiation?
Initiation is generally held the winter term after which you rush.
Chapter Facilities
Do I get to live in the facilities?
Yes, you are free to live in the house after you have spent two terms in the residence hall as a freshman.
Do I have to live in the facilities?
Usually members are not required to live in and our chapter has the flexibility to allow all members who would like to live in the chance to do so because of the apartments. However, there is a charge if you choose not to live in and the apartments are not fully occupied by Alpha
Phis.
What rules are there about the facilities?
The rules that must be abided to are set by Campus Village Apartments and Alpha Phi Internationals and are comparable to other apartment complexes and sororities.
Chapter Activities
What activities are required?
We have weekly house meetings
which last an hour or less, as well as philanthropy, sisterhood, recruitment
and initiation events throughout the year.
How much time does it take?
On a normal basis, just a few
hours per week are required. However, there is flexibility in our schedules
to be sure that all members have time for school activities as well as other
events. Rush does take more time than usual, but since many of the events
provide us with the opportunity to socialize and meet people, it does not feel like a time commitment.
What is your philanthropy?
Our philanthropy is the Alpha Phi foundation, which raises money for research into cardiac care, the #1 cause of death among women. However, throughout the course of the year, we also participate in several other events, such as: the CRIM, Flint Clean-up, pop can drive,
Big Brothers/Big Sisters Bowling, and a car wash. We’re also hoping to do more philanthropic events with the Flint community.
