New Health Insurance Verification ProcedureKettering unveiled a new procedure for verifying student’s health insurance coverage which was effective July 1, 2007. The University now requires all enrolled students to submit proof of insurance through a third party. The Maksin Group, verifies coverage through their online system at www.Maksin.com/KetteringU.shtml. Students who fail to provide proof of insurance through the waiver process will automatically be enrolled in Maksin’s Accident and Sickness Insurance Plan, at a cost of $476.00 semi annually (coverage from July 1, 2008 thru December 31, 2008). This upcoming waiver period will begin May 1, 2008 and ends July 30, 2008. Both B section and A section students must complete the waiver by July 30, 2008. The University’s policy that all students carry health insurance is longstanding, although it has not previously required students to demonstrate coverage until last year. When announcing the new procedure in June 2007, Interim Provost & Vice President for Academic Services Robert Simpson noted, “the high cost of health care in the United States presents a potentially serious health risk and financial burden for students who have either inadequate health insurance coverage or none at all. We instituted this new procedure to ensure that all our students have access to quality health care when they need it.” Verified health insurance coverage protects all members of the community from a variety of risks, including those associated with hand-on experiments in classes or labs, participation in sports, and communicable diseases. Kettering’s new verification procedure follows practices in place at most American colleges and universities. Maksin’s Student Accident and Sickness Insurance Plan provides health insurance coverage for college students at a highly competitive cost. Students may also purchase dependent coverage through the group. Students and their parents may contact Maksin through their web site www.Maksin.com/KetteringU.shtml. or toll-free at (877) 775-5430. Kettering’s Wellness Center staff will also answer questions about the new verification procedure. Some frequently asked questions about it include: Why does Kettering care whether or not students have health insurance? We believe access to health care, through affordable insurance, to be critical to our student’s access and wellbeing. We want to ensure that ill and injured students receive necessary medical care, when and where they need it. The most cost effective means for providing access to affordable health care is through individual insurance coverage. Rather then mandating all students purchase Kettering’s health insurance, we only require it of those students who do not have other coverage. Why did Kettering change its procedure for verifying student’s health insurance? We changed the health insurance verification procedure for significant reasons. For one, technological advances now make the electronic verification process highly cost and efficient. Also, changes in the health care industry and federal regulation have made it very difficult for the University to verify student’s health insurance coverage. At the same time, the cost of medical care has risen dramatically, resulting in higher and higher medical expenses, including insurance premiums. We cannot allow un-and under-insured students to put the Kettering community at risk because they don’t seek necessary medical care or purchase insurance coverage because of cost. In order to provide adequate and affordable insurance coverage to our students, we must provide insurers with what they refer to as “hard waivers,” i.e., verifiable proof of insurance for those who do not purchase their plan.
