Pre-college program looks at Sustainable Energy
Boys and girls, it's time to Get Energized!!
Kettering University will introduce a Sustainable Energy Pre-College Program during two, one-week sessions this July. The program will provide hands-on educational experiences for boys and girls including exhibits, laboratory and classroom activities. There's even a fun, field trip planned.
Get Energized will offer 9-10th graders and 11-12th graders time to explore:
- how fuel cells work,
- the different ways of powering fuel cells,
- how fuel cells can be used to power homes, cars and buses,
- how to build a fuel cell car and wind turbine from a kit,
- how solar, hydro and wind power can be used, and
- careers in sustainable energy.
Session one is July 16-20 for students in the 9th and 10th grades. Session two is July 23-27 for students in the 11th and 12th grades.
Project Director Dr. Ahmad Pourmovahed said the program will be a blend of fun activities and hands-on educational experiences for both boys and girls. Activities will include mini-fuel cells, the Hyrunner (a mini-fuel cell car), a hydrogen fuel cell electric car, and interesting ways to explore biofuels, geo-hydro energy, hydrogen safety, solar and wind energy, plus a look at careers in the field of Sustainable Energy.
Kettering University and the Center for Fuel Cell Systems and Powertrain Integration received funding from the Department of Labor under the Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development (WIRED) initiative in support of this program.
Applications are due April 20. For more information, visit our website or contact Virginia Hill at 810-762-9873.
