Academic Excellence Workshops (AEW)

Academic Excellence Workshops provides advanced group-learning techniques for technical subject mastery which incorporates problem sets that expand student capabilities beyond the normal curriculum.

A disciplined learning environment (vs. a teaching environment) in which students demonstrate subject mastery to peers and learn test-taking skills. The workshops help develop student skills in communication about technical issues and the ability to work effectively in groups.

Success oriented: aimed at high grades and no failing grades.

A supplemental learning experience that is closely related to a specific technical course.

Goal of Academic Excellence Workshops:

Build An Academic Community Among Students, Facilitators, Faculty
• More complete mastery of material
• Enhanced technical communications skills
• Increased ability to work as a team member

MAGIC (Maximizing Academic Growth In College)

Academic success strategies are presented through a segment of the freshman orientation program entitled MAGIC (Maximizing Academic Growth In College). A significant segment is devoted to the benefits of collaborative learning and group study. Topics introduced include: setting personal goals, seeking help from peers, professors, campus resources, time management, roommate issues, developing study skills and test taking.

Personal development focuses on getting freshmen to realize that their personal growth and development are dependent on obtaining a good understanding of themselves. Issues covered include: academic motivation, social motivation, general coping and being receptive to support services.
