History
Founded in 1919 as the School of Automobile Trades and renamed General Motors Institute (GMI) in 1926 when owned and operated by General Motors Corporation. In 1982, became GMI Engineering & Management Institute and in 1998 became Kettering University.

Laboratory Facilities
State-of-the-art manufacturing, automotive, laser, radioisotope, heat transfer, electricity and solid-state electronics, fuel cell, crash safety and metallurgy laboratories. Kettering University also features high-level computer-aided design (CAD), computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM), human factors, digital and analog computer, robotics, holography, polymer processing, injection molding, welding, foundry, electron microscopy, and engineering and design simulation facilities.
Library
The Kettering University Library is located on the second floor of the Academic Building and contains a collection of 131,900 books and 32,570 e-books. In addition, the library offers approximately 7,400 periodical titles. The mission of the library is to provide resources and services to facilitate information access. Online resources have been dramatically enhanced in recent years.
Location
The Kettering University campus is approximately 60 miles from Ann Arbor, Detroit and Lansing, and offers a beautiful 45-acre campus in Flint. Kettering is a 10-minute drive from Flint's Bishop International Airport.

Kettering is one of the country’s top producers of undergraduate mechanical engineering students and has one of the largest student chapters of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) in the world.
Scharchburg Archives
Created by the GMI Alumni Association in 1973 , Scharchburg Archives is dedicated to automotive and industrial history. It is one of the largest archival collections pertaining to General Motors, outside of the General Motors Company. One of its largest collections is that of Charles Kettering, which attracts researchers from around the globe. The archives maintain a sizable photo collections with more than 70,000 digitized images. The archives staff members also manage the archives of Kettering University.
Student Housing
Frances Wilson Thompson Hall provides on-campus housing for 300-400 students each term. All rooms are wired for access to the Internet and Kettering computer system. In addition, Campus Village Apartments are modern and offer exceptional living quarters for 140-160 upper class students, state-of-the-art infrastructure support for the Internet and access to the Kettering computer system. Campus Village Apartments Phase II opened summer 2002 for an additional 80 students.
