West Michigan businesses have teamed up with Kettering University to recognize student achievement with new scholarship opportunities.

The connection between west Michigan and Kettering University is getting stronger. Five of the first nine recipients of the West Michigan Student of the Month Scholarship at Kettering University were recognized at a banquet May 16 at the Centennial Country Club in Grand Rapids.

All nine recipients include: Alex Mason, of Kent City, Nicholas VanDyke, of Grand Rapids, Breton Inman, of Calendonia, Scott Price, of Kenowa Hills, and Andrew Brocker, of Byron Center, Deke Pyle, of Grand Rapids, Derrick Edwards, of Orchard Lake, Daniel Ven Duinen, of Grand Rapids, Nicholas Black, of Muskegon, Nicholas Van Dyke, of Grand Rapids, Taisia Singleton, of Grand Rapids, Scott Price, of Grand Rapids, Breton Inman, of Caledonia and Andrew Brocker, of Byron Center.

The West Michigan Student of the Month Scholarship was the brainchild of alumnus Armen Oumedian '49 and Henry Capogna, sales manager for Newsradio WOOD 1300. "Armen and Henry wanted to provide tuition assistance to students from west Michigan who planned to seek co-op back home," said Carmon Liversedge, Corporate Relations manager at Kettering, "and to give Kettering some exposure throughout the listening area."

To apply for the scholarship, students must reside in Kent, Ottawa or Muskegon counties and must be high school seniors or transfer students who have been accepted to Kettering University. The awardee is chosen based on a 500 word essay which answers the question, "How will attending Kettering University, with our premier cooperative education program, benefit you and the companies of West Michigan?"

Winners receive a $1,000 scholarship to Kettering University, a gift basket, a Newsradio WOOD 1300 'Student of the Month' T-shirt, a custom-framed certificate, dinner for three from the official 'Student of the Month' restaurant, and a reward for the student's school. The award is presented by a Newsradio WOOD 1300 on-air personality who makes a surprise visit to the student's school.
