Teams of young inventors descended on the Flint area Dec. 15 and 16 to challenge each other in nanobattle.

The second of two statewide FIRST Lego League Nano Quest Championship Tournament events was at Carman-Ainsworth Middle School, 1409 W. Maple Ave, Flint, Saturday, Dec. 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A total of 44 teams competed in the Flint/Genesee County Championship Tournament for a chance to advance to the international championship tournament in Atlanta in April 2007. Four of the teams were from Flint and Genesee County, they are the: Micro Heroes/CHIP, from Rankin Elementary, of Flint, White Wolves/Mork from Ork, from Fenton Community, of Fenton, LEGO Blockheads/LEGO Roboto, from Southwestern Academy, of Flint, and Martians/Dr. Onan Noswad, from Goodrich Middle School, Goodrich.

FIRST Lego League (FLL) introduces children around the world to the fun and experience of solving real-world problems by applying math, science, and technology to solve real-world engineering problems. FLL teams have been to space, searched the oceans, and explored ways to help humankind. The 2006 challenge zoomed from the world we know, through a super high-powered atomic microscope, to the strange world of individual atoms for Nano Quest.

Prior to the Saturday competition, teams could participate in a variety of pre-tournament activities Friday, Dec. 15 at Kettering University, the General Motors Truck Plant and the Flint Cultural Center.

Students toured the Truck Plant to see the latest in manufacturing technology, robots that build trucks. They also spent time at Kettering visiting the Crash Safety Center with Spartakus the crash test dummy and his family of crash dummies, learned about Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) race vehicles built by Kettering student teams, saw a small mobile robots demonstration and participated in a pre-competition team challenge.

After a pizza partythe FLL teams toured Sloan Museum and saw a laser show at Longway Planetarium.
