Kettering's efforts to show high school girls the variety of careers in engineering and the sciences have received an assist from Mervyn's department store at the Genesee Valley Mall in Flint. Edith Withey, Kettering's associate dean of Student Affairs, accepted an $800 check to benefit Kettering's 21st Century Woman program during a ceremony at the mall Jan. 13.

"21st Century Woman is strictly for girls," Withey explained. "We explore all areas of engineering and other fields. The participants don't have to be rocket scientists or even want to be rocket scientists to join us. All they have to do is be interested in working in a nontraditional field."

Lynette Dewley, executive team leader for Mervyns at Genesee Valley Mall, made the presentation. "The Target Corporation is committed to arts and education programs in our community," Dewley said. "We're a huge promoter for any women's program and this program fell into line with that."

Withey said the funds will be used for scholarships for the young women unable to afford the full tuition of the 21st Century Woman program. Grants also are used for equipment and supplies so participants can take their projects home with them.

She noted that the 21st Century Woman program is focused on girls in grades 9, 10 and 11. The two-week summer program is followed up with Saturday programs through the rest of year, ending in the spring. Workshops and seminars explore a variety of job opportunities and allow girls to see nontraditional career paths.
