Fraternities and sororities honored during Convocation

Convocation ceremonies were hosted Oct. 16 to welcome Kettering's Section B students to campus and award some of the highest honors presented to fraternities and sororities on campus.

Convocation ceremonies were hosted Oct. 16 to welcome Kettering's Section B students to campus and award some of the highest honors presented to fraternities and sororities on campus. The event was in McKinnon Theatre and serves as the ceremonial opening of the new academic term.

Student Government Vice President Patrick Recker offered the welcome, followed by comments by Student Government President Qasar Younis. President James E.A. John spoke on Kettering's strategic plan and offered an update on the University.

Alumnus Mike Lashbrook' 98 encouraged students to find out more about the Kettering Leadership Endowment and announced that applications are now available for fellowships. More information on the fellowship is available by contacting Director of Major Gifts Jack Stock at jstock@kettering.edu.

GREEK LIFE AWARDS:

Some of the most prestigious awards presented in the University's Greek Life system were handed out by student leaders Rebecca Barthlow and Scott MacMartin. The awards follow.

Outstanding Chapter Presidents of the Year

The Outstanding Chapter President of the Year award is given to people who have made outstanding contributions to their chapters. This year's recipients are:

Scholarship Awards

This award recognizes chapters for academic excellence. As quoted from a membership book, "The fraternity and sorority should complement your educational experience while providing you the resources and assistance to succeed academically." The following chapters have accomplished this task.

Distinguished Leader Award

The Distinguished Leader award is given for exceptional contributions to Greek life, their respective council and chapter. Candidates were nominated by faculty and staff. "Leaders are like eagles, they don't flock, you find them one at a time." This year's Distinguished leaders are:

Chapter Excellence Award

This award is for Overall Chapter Excellence. To attain this award the chapter must have had outstanding programming in the categories of academics, community service, member and new member education, risk management, campus involvement, and financial management. This year's winners are:

The Dean's Cup, Outstanding Chapter of the Year

Presenting this award was Dean of Students Patrick Deese. The Dean's Cup recognizes outstanding programming in all levels of the chapter. This is the highest award a chapter can win at Kettering University. The Dean's Cup recipients were chosen from the chapters qualifying for the Chapter Excellence award. These chapters exemplify fraternity and sorority life not only on campus, but also in the community. This year's winners:
