We’re not just fixing the problems of the past, but we’re actually building a foundation for the future of this community and young people have a very good sense of what that new future may be.”

Two Kettering University students have been selected to serve on Flint Mayor Dayne Walling's Student Cabinet. Andrew Sullivan, of Grand Blanc, and Michael Berezny, of Flint, will be part of the cabinet providing ongoing input into city affairs and serving on the standing advisory committee to the Mayor.

Sullivan, a junior majoring in Mechanical Engineering, decided to submit an application for the Mayor's cabinet because he was interested in getting a closer look at how city government operates. “I am excited to have an opportunity to be part of a solution, and hopefully create a positive change in our community,” he said.

Berezny, a senior majoring in Mechanical Engineering and currently studying abroad at Hochschule Esslingen University of Applied Sciences in Germany until July, applied to be a part of the Mayor’s cabinet because he felt the Cabinet will be an effective method to communicate the opinions of youth in the city, as well as assist the Mayor’s office. “Growing up in Flint, I have a certain appreciation for the city, and I always have.  I want to help put Flint back in the once glowing spotlight, and help pull it out of the dark shadow that it has been engulfed by,” said Berezny.

The Student Cabinet is scheduled to meet April 28. The Cabinet will meet monthly to discuss proposals and develop new recommendations for department heads. Proposals the Student Cabinet works on will be related to issues based on the group’s priorities.

“We’re not just fixing the problems of the past, but we’re actually building a foundation for the future of this community and young people have a very good sense, a lot better sense than people who have been around for a long time, of what that new future may be,” Walling said in an interview with the Michigan Times.
