Dr. Dan Russell and baseball bats: “Pitchers beware,” the Anderson Bat Company boasts of its latest double-walled metal youth baseball bat. “The TechZilla XP is back and coming to a field near you!”  Injuries to young pitchers and infielders from hard-hit balls have fueled a longstanding debate about whether such metal bats are too potent. Amateur organizations have recently taken steps to lessen the risk … In April, USA Baseball, the nonprofit organization that governs amateur baseball, named a scientific advisory committee to consider new tests and performance standards for youth bats. Daniel A. Russell, a committee member and applied physics professor at Kettering University in Michigan, said that bat experts had conducted extensive tests and field studies in college baseball and adult softball over the past 10 years, but that they just recently turned their attention to youth baseball. “For Little League, until USA Baseball formed the advisory panel this year, I don’t know how much scientific input they had,” Russell said. He added that Little League’s contention that its test assures that all bats perform the same as wood was false, and that the industry knew how to manipulate bat weights to pass the test. Bruce A. Pierson '76: Bruce Pierson, a 37-year General Motors veteran, will assume his new position as the local plant manager Nov. 1, amid a tumultuous time for the Shreveport assembly plant. The plant's second shift was eliminated Sept. 26, leaving 798 people without jobs. Despite the plant's uncertain future, Pierson has decided to focus on making the local plant a "viable entity" in GM's future. As long as the plant continues to show improvements regional leadership will take notice, he said. "We are measured by what is referred to as the Scorecard, which is made up of many individual metrics and is common across all General Motors assembly plants," he said. "We need to focus on attainment of all those metrics and work on other items that I am sure the organization will educate me on."
