This Laboratory is primarily used for the IME 301 – Engineering Materials Course.  In this course the professor teaches both the class-session and the laboratory-sessions to ensure that each reinforce the other. Students Conduct Experiments Verifying the Subject Matter Discussed in Class-Sessions

Processing changes the microstructure (large scale arrangement of atoms and molecules). This microstructure determines the properties of the material. Students, see this for themselves in this laboratory, actively discussing their findings with the professor. Nothing is more rewarding for a faculty member than to discuss subject matter with students as they conduct verifying experiments. Steel alloys of identical chemical composition can have very different properties. The structure and therefore the properties of the steel changes dramatically based on how the steel is processed.
