Write a short biography about yourself (this will serve as your campaign slogan/introduction).

My name is Lance Byers.  I am a Junior II at Kettering and plan to graduate in 2015 with a major in electrical engineering.  I have a wonderful wife that is a huge support for me while I am in school.  I have been on the Dean’s List each semester at Kettering.  I want to be Senior Class Representative so I can improve the Kettering students’ experience while they are here.   I feel that there is always room for improvement and a few of the major issues that need work are student parking, communication of events, and the liberal studies guest credit hold.  I plan to work on resolving these issues and many others as Senior Class Representative.

1. What activities are/were you involved in at Kettering and in high school? (list academic year, as well as any positions you may have held in any organization)

IEEE Student Branch Treasurer, Spring and Fall of 2013.

Student Alumni Council Special Events Chair, Fall 2013 to Spring 2014.

Delta Tau Delta Fraternity Treasurer, Fall 2013 to Spring 2014.

Eta Kappa Nu Honor Society

2. What is the one trait you want people to know you for?

The one trait that I want people to associate with me is that I am a hard worker.

3. What is your favorite quote/saying(s)?

“Fear causes hesitation and hesitation causes all your fears to come true.”

“When you look back on your life, you will not regret the things you did, but you will regret the things you did not do.”

“All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.” Proverbs 14:23

4. What do you think can be improved at Kettering and what steps will you take to accomplish this improvement?

Parking is a problem for people who live off campus.  The school has taken some steps to improve it, but I feel that we can work with the school to increase parking by the Academic Building. The liberal studies guest credits hold.  I feel that students should have the opportunity to take liberal studies courses off campus and this can be accomplished through working with the Registrar’s Office. Communication is the third issue that I see room for improvement.  There are so many events, but I feel that many students do not hear about them or forget.  Figure out another mode of communication, like automatic text messaging, and implement that for event notification.

5. What has been your biggest success and failure? What have you learned from them?

My biggest failure was losing in the individual wrestling state championship finals my junior year.  This also brought about my biggest success.  My senior year, I was able to win in the state finals.  Even though it was my biggest failure, it turned out to be a great driving force for my senior year.  I learned that your greatest failures can be your greatest motivation.  It also taught me that you learn so much more from your losses.  You do learn from the successes, but you will always learn more from your failures.

6. What is your motivation for wanting to represent the student body via Student Senate?

My motivation for wanting to represent the student body is that I feel things could be improved at the school.  I could sit back and complain about these issues, or I could be part of the driving force to change.  Student Senate is probably the most effective mode for change at Kettering University.
