My name is Ernest Langston Estes and I am a Senior Electrical Engineering major with an Acoustics minor. Although, I'm originally from Portland , Oregon I was taught that I carry the same responsibilities with the community where I reside as I do in the community I call my home. Since joining the Kagle Mentoring Program in 2005 I have been given the opportunity and the resources to affect the future of Flint through its' youth. I am grateful for the programs flexibility and the sincere dedication of its membership in the pursuit of our mission.

MCTE/KSS/KFL Lead Mentor - Faith Brown
Major: Computer Engineering, ‘09
I am the second child of Pastor William L Brown and Rev. Laura L Brown. I was born in Detroit, MI but adopted and raised in Saginaw, MI. I graduated from Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy in 2004. I am currently a Senior I at Kettering University studying in the field of Computer Engineering. I have worked for Ford Motor Company for three years now, and I love the experience.
Having parents who work in the ministry has always inspired me to be a leader. At first, I believed the pressure was too great. However, as I matured, I realized the impact that my work has on those I helped. This led me to believe that this is something worth pursuing.
I am currently involved in various organizations around campus:
- Kagle- Mentor
- Yearbook-Editor
- SHPE-Historian
- KSG-Secretary
- Diversity Council-Member
- SWE-Member
After completing my undergraduate degree, I wish to acquire a Masters in Computer Engineering. After reaching my educational goals, I would like to become the Director of the VASE Climate Control Department at Ford. Personally, I would like to settle down and enjoy the family life.
Public Relations - Lulu Chen
Major: Applied Mathematics, ‘09
Hi everyone! Welcome to Kagle! My name is Lu Chen, Applied Math major and junior student at Kettering. I came from China two and half years ago. The experience has been great! I love the people and the food (hot dog and cheese are still my favorite)! At spare time, I like to watch news and movies, swimming, skating and play ping-pong.
I have been a Kagle mentor since last year. Nothing can be more rewarding than the experience. As the mission states, our goal is to “promote the value of higher education”. Today, higher education is innovation, inspiration and the future. In addition, mentoring is a way to help students accelerate and accomplish. While aiming specially at disadvantaged students, Kagle is a great opportunity for many Flint community students, who want to improve and succeed in their lives. Taking the advice from my mentors in high school, I decided to come to US for education and now have overcome many obstacles and become a much stronger person. However, without my mentors’ advice, I would not have even thought about stepping into another big world.
So far, as a group, we have tutored many Flint community students, organized forums and fairs for children and orphans. Now we are planning to have our first annual conference to influence and open doors for more students. When first being recruited into Kagle program, I was super proud and excited to be part of it. Moreover, I hope you will participate and feel the same with me in the future!

CREEK Co-Lead Mentor - Ashley Berry
Major: Computer Engineering, ‘08
Hello! I am in my senior year at Kettering University, pursing a degree in computer engineering. I am a co-op student with General Motors, in the Powertrain division. After graduating with my bachelor’s degree, I want to pursue a Master’s (and perhaps a PhD) before entering the work force. I joined the Kagle Mentoring Program because I wanted to make a difference in the youth of the Flint community. Flint is my hometown, and I want to take part in the guidance of the youth here, because children today have to lead our society tomorrow. I hope that through this program, I can mentor middle and elementary school students, in hopes of helping them to learn and grow into responsible, intelligent adults, with goals and future plans to attain. By the time I leave this program, I hope to have attained this goal.
Community Tutor Lead Mentor - Sarah McIntosh
Major: Applied Mathematics, ‘10
Mentoring is an unselfish act that exhibits a genuine care for one’s community. I wanted to become a mentor in the Kagle Mentoring program to reach out to any that may need help or just an outlet. I know from personal experience how valuable a strong, positive influence can be in someone’s life. Although, I am not from Flint, I am a product of a city (Gary, IN) that shares many of the socioeconomic struggles within the city. When students see negative things happening within their community on a daily basis, it makes it hard for students to go beyond their surroundings. I just want to provide hope to youngsters in the area. Hopefully I can help them fulfill their goals sufficiently.
Graduate Assistant - Tyrone Hampton
Major: MBA (Graduate student) ‘08
Growing up, I have always been blessed with mentors, which eventually led to me receiving the baton and running with it myself. Life allows us numerous opportunities to take the lead and to win life’s race. However, the biggest mistake most humans make is trying to win life’s race independently. It was once said, “we as individuals do not grow independently, but interdependent on one another.” In my opinion, “mentoring allows you to be who you were already born to be, while affecting others in a positive way. Life is about purpose so it is up to YOU to define who YOU really are, and in what area YOU were born to serve, for that particular reason.” As a child, I never had a sense of direction as to what I really wanted to be in life. The only thing I knew was the fact that I would never allow anyone to make that decision for me no matter how long it took. As a first generation on-time high school graduate, First Generation College undergraduate, and now first generation to attend graduate school, purpose is beginning to become even more important. With the baton in hand from past and present mentors, it is up to me to return the favor continuing this race of life while fulfilling part of life’s purpose. The one thing I have discovered while mentoring since the age 16, is the fact that mentoring promotes growth interdependent of others. Mentoring is part of who I am, and who I forever will be.
