IT Update Alert – 6/15/2009
IT will be pushing out (remotely applying) an update to the Sun Java System Connector for Outlook 2003/2007 over the next couple of days. This new version will include a fix for a recent Microsoft update which causes Outlook to crash when accessing a mail folder. It will also resolve an interoperability issue with Office 2007 SP2 and the Sun Outlook Connector which was first reported by IT back on 5/1/2009.

After the new Connector has been pushed out, Outlook users may be prompted with a "Choose Profile" dialog box. In order to not have this dialog come up each time you start outlook you should:

  1. Expand the Options area of the dialog box by clicking on the "Options>>"   button.
  2. Check the box marked "Set as default profile".
  3. Click "OK"

If this dialog still persists to prompt you after the above procedure is completed, please contact the IT Helpdesk at x8324 or helpldesk@kettering.edu for further instruction.

Spam Alert - 5/4/2009
** Kettering University **Never** Emails Requesting Passwords **

If you receive an email that appears to have come from Kettering University requesting your password, be alerted that it is not legitimate.

The Kettering IT Department will never ask for such information in an email, especially passwords. Your response should be to immediately delete it. Please Do Not forward the email to the Help Desk as we are already aware of the fact due to prior detection notification.

Be aware of any type of unsolicited email that requests any type of personal information!

There are higher volumes of spam email in circulation now days as spammers are becoming more creative and elusive. Be aware that although our Barracuda Spam Filter (Spam Statistics) appliance catches the majority of spam email, there is always some that will sneak through. Due to this reality everyone needs to be vigilant and aware of how to respond. Many of these types of email are used to lure unsuspecting users by using authentic-looking email in an attempt to steal passwords, financial or personal information.

Issue Alert - 5/1/2009 - Outlook 2007
If you are using Outlook 2007 with the Sun Communications Connector please be aware that the recent release of the Office 2007 SP2 has created an incompatibility issue that arises when you try to open one of your synchronized folders. IT is currently working with Sun for a resolution. In the meantime, please avoid applying Office 2007 SP2. If you have encountered the issue due to downloading the SP, merely backing out of the SP will not correct the problem. A reinstallation of Office 2007 will be required which the Helpdesk will be able to assist you with upon contacting us.
