Radio Battery FAQ

How long will my battery keep my radio working?

A typical Icom, Motorola or Kenwood battery pack should provide somewhere between 8 - 10 hours of normal usage. Your mileage may vary depending on how much you transmit, the temperature of the battery, and its general condition.

Should I let my battery run all the way down before I charge it?

With NiCad battery packs, that is the preferred way to do it. If you continually recharge a pack that is not completely discharged, you will notice a decrease in usable time. The is due to a phenomena called "memory effect".

With the newer Li-Ion packs found on the Kenwood radios, "memory effect" should not be an issue.

What is memory effect?

For example, if a NiCad battery is repeatedly discharged to only 40% of its capacity during normal use, then recharged, the battery eventually will only accept a charge to 40% of its capacity! If a user normally gets 10 hours of usage, it would mean that this battery would only supply about 4 hours of usage after a full charge!

Can memory effect be eliminated?

Maybe. Many packs can be reconditioned, to restore full capacity. Bring your battery to 1-600CC for testing and reconditioning. If the pack can be brought back to 80% capacity, it is considered a serviceable battery, and will be returned to you. Less than 80%, and it is removed from service.

Does temperature have any effect on the battery?

It sure does. Batteries used in cold conditions can have their capacity reduced by up to 50%. Extreme heat can reduce normal usage time by 10% or more. NiCAd batteries work best at temperatures 70-75 degrees F.

What is the normal life span of a battery pack?

A radio battery pack should provide 1 - 2 years of service. A battery that is stored normally has a 2 year shelf life. A new or stored battery MUST be charged prior to use.

Where do I get a new battery?

Your department should have spare batteries on hand. If not, stop by 1600CC.  Batteries are stocked for current radio types.  Your department will be charged for batteries supplied by Electronic Systems.

What do I do with my old battery?

Please bring it to 1600CC. We will test it, and if it is unusable, will dispose of it properly.
