Automated PC Updates

Windows PC Patching:

At a random time during the day, a Windows computer checks and downloads any needed window patches from a Kettering server.

Once your computer downloads the patches it needs, patches are installed in one of three ways.   Two of the methods do not require any user intervention.

  1. The user may get a pop-up balloon next to the clock telling the user that patches have been downloaded.   The user can click on the balloon and either read details on the downloaded patches or select to install them.  The user can also just ignore the balloon message; the patches will then be installed when the user is no longer logged in.
  2. At 3:00am, if no user is logged in and the computer is on, the downloaded patches will be installed and the computer will reboot if needed.
  3. When a computer boots up in the morning, if it sits at the login screen for over 3 minutes, the downloaded patches will be installed and the computer will reboot automatically, if needed.

Automatic ETrust Updates:

ETrust is configured on user PC's to pull any updates at 9am, 3pm, 9pm, and 3am.  These times are chosen so that users who work afternoons, evenings, or nights will get updates on their PC's as well.

The virus scan runs with the Vet engine at 11am on Thursdays and the Inoculate engine at 11am on Fridays.  Each engine works a little differently.  This way the user gets the benefit of both engines having scanned their PC.
