Social Security
A Social Security Card/Number is required of all students who work on campus, whether as a graduate assistant or as a student worker, and for students working off-campus on their co-op/work term.
Applications for a Social Security Card can be obtained in the International Office Room 3-901 CC. The completed application, a letter from the International Office, a letter from your co-op employer (students working on campus will need a letter from department of employment - recreation center, student activities, etc.), your I-20 or DS 2019, passport and I-94, must be taken to the local Social Security Office at 929 Stevens St. in Flint. Business hours 9 A.M. to 4 P.M. Monday thru Friday. Transportation can be arranged in the International Office Due to processing entry into the U.S. through SEVIS it is suggested by the Social Security Office to apply no sooner than third week of term.
In many cases, F-1 and J-1 visa holders are exempt from withholding monies for Social Security on their earnings. Information is available in the International Office. Before you begin your first co-op/work term stop in Kettering's International Office for information to be taken to the Payroll Department of your employer.
