Social Security
A Social Security Card/Number is required of all students who work on campus, whether as a graduate assistant or as a student worker, and for students working off-campus on their co-op/work term.
Applications for a Social Security Card can be obtained in the Office of International Programs Room 1-919 AB.
You will need to take the following documents to the Social Security Office:
- Completed Form SS-5 (Social Security Card Application)
- Passport with I-94 Card
- Copies of your I-20 or DS-2019
- Social Security Request Letter from the Office of International Programs
-or-
Copy of the letter from your Co-op or Internship employer offering you employment
The local Social Security Office is located at 1149 Robert T Longway, Flint, MI 48503. Business hours are 9 A.M. to 4 P.M. Monday thru Friday.

If you arrive during the 30 day grace period before the beginning of your program, you Will Not be eligible to apply for a Social Security Number until after the program start date on your I-20 or DS-2019. Due to processing entry into the U.S. through SEVIS it is suggested by the Social Security Office to apply no sooner than third week of term.
In many cases, F-1 and J-1 visa holders are exempt from withholding monies for Social Security on their earnings. Information is available in the International Office. Before you begin your first co-op/work term stop in Kettering's International Office for information to take to the Payroll Department of your employer.
