Master of Science in Engineering - Mechanical Cognate Curriculum


You are able to pursue our Master of Science in Engineering – Mechanical Cognate degree if you have a Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited program. Engineering technology degrees will not be considered for the Engineering programs. 

The Curriculum for MSE - Mechanical Cognate consists of ten 4-credit courses or 40 credit hours. 

Required Course

MECH-522 Engineering Analysis

Plus - nine (9) additional Graduate courses*

  1. Any five (5) ME Graduate Courses
  2. Additional three (3) Cognate Courses (see example below)
  3. One (1) additional elective or a program thesis

* You may take no more than four (4) 500-level classes total to count towards your degree.

Courses must be pre-approved by the Mechanical Engineering Department.

Example Cognate Courses

If you desire a cognate in Fuel Cell, then you may select the following courses to satisfy the three cognate courses:

MECH-526 Fuel Cell Science & Engineering - (on-campus only)
MECH-544 Introduction to Automotive Powertrains - (on-campus only)
MECH-545 Hybrid Electric Vehicle Propulsion - (on-campus only)

If you desire a cognate in Polymers, then you may select the following courses to satisfy the three cognate courses:

MECH-580 Properties of Polymers - (on-campus only)
IME-507 Polymer Processing - (on-campus only)
CHEM-635 Multi-component Polymer Systems - (on-campus only)

You are able to create your cognate based on your individual interests and course availability.
