About Distance Learning
Distance learning allows Kettering University to eliminate geographic barriers for off-campus students. With distance learning, graduate courses are presented to students in a high-tech television studio on the Kettering University campus - allowing us to digitally capture the entire class presentation, lecture materials, case studies, question-and-answer sessions, and other content. These on-campus class sessions typically meet one night per week for the length of the term.
Distance Learning Delivery Methods
Classes are recorded onto DVDs, CD-ROMs, and Internet video-streaming formats. Distance learning students receive the same class experience and materials that on-campus students receive. Since courses are recorded, distance learning students receive the course content/materials one week after on-campus students. Distance learning allows off-campus students to complete the entire program from a remote location. Students are able to select their preferred delivery method and we ship this classroom experience to your location on a weekly basis throughout the term. You can also "attend" class by viewing these presentations via the Internet through video streaming using RealPlayer.
Learning Centers
Kettering University's distance learning graduate programs are available at more than 130 Learning Centers in North America, Europe and Asia. A Learning Center is a virtual campus that is usually located at a company worksite and provides students the opportunity to interact and "attend" class independently or sometimes with co-workers. In most cases, new students should work with Kettering University's Graduate Office to either establish a Learning Center at their worksite or enroll at one of Kettering University's 130+ Learning Centers.
Homework and other coursework is generally submitted by the student to the professor either via e-mail or by hard copy through the mail. Some courses may require proctored exams, in which case the "site coordinator" from your Learning Center (or Kettering University-approved proctor for independent students) will proctor these exams at your site and ship them directly to the professor.
Kettering University provides you the flexibility to complete the program and take courses at your own pace. You have up to six years to complete the program and you can take as many or as few classes as you wish per term - or even take entire terms off to tend to other responsibilities. Most students take one or two classes per term, which will allow you to complete the program in as few as 15 months!
What to Expect
Each course in the program consists of standard graduate program coursework, which may include homework, projects, exams, tests, papers or other work - depending on the course and/or professor. You receive grades for each course. There is no difference or designation between on-campus and off-campus students on your diploma or transcripts.
To help alleviate the distance gap, you will have personal access to your professors through telephone, voice mail, e-mail, fax, Internet bulletin boards and/or chat rooms. Professors provide office hours during which you may contact him/her to ask questions or discuss course materials.
