Dr. Patrick Atkinson, professor of Mechanical Engineering
Ph.D. from Michigan State University in Mechanical Engineering, with expertise in bioengineering, crash safety, orthopaedics, and solid mechanics (how things deform when they are pushed or pulled).

Atkinson finds Kettering students driven, innovative and engaged. He feels there is a lot that distinguishes them from students at other universities. He says, "They know what being an engineer is all about because of the cooperative education experience. . .they require and expect the faculty to be up on their topics." He feels that this results because they are so current and have the ability to handle an academic, work, and social life which makes them people "who are able to perform in a variety of settings." Because Atkinson's time as a Kettering student left a very positive impression on him, he had a desire to return and do the same job as his professors had. Atkinson enjoys "giving students a great engineering education and the additional courses/labs that allow them to specialize in engineering subspecialties."

His hot tip for prospective students is: "Just remember that what you do from the age of 20 to 30 will dictate to a large part what you will be doing from 30 to 60. On one hand, this is great; it's a blank slate, you can do whatever you want. On the down side, it is a blank slate: you have to decide on something."

Hidden talents and outside interests: In addition to an extremely strong commitment to his family, Atkinson finds time to enjoy music, playing instrument, karaoke and working around the house.

Research Focus: Sustainable Energy Generation

The focus of Dr. Aurandt's research is biochemical processes of anaerobic digestion to create renewable natural gas. The breakdown of organic material by microbes in the absence of oxygen creates biogas - a mixture of methane, carbon dioxide, and trace components. The biogas can be upgraded to create pipeline quality methane to generate energy. Dr. Aurandt's research focuses on the understanding of the biochemical process of biogas creation to increase biogas and methane production. Furthermore, another avenue of research is the identification and quantification of trace components in biogas that can interfere with power generation.

Her favorite part about teaching is involving students in cutting-edge research as part of the Biogas Center for Energy Excellence at Kettering University. Dr. Aurandt is the Principle Investigator for the Anaerobic Digestion and Verification Lab which operates small, bench, and pilot anaerobic reactors and analytical equipment for process and biogas monitoring. Her focus is the Biochemistry of hydrolysis and methanogenesis.

G. Reginald Bell, Professor of Polymer Chemistry
Master's degree from the University of Tennessee in Organic Chemistry and Polymer Science

Bell has never met a Kettering student, in 44 years of teaching, that wasn't one of his "favorite students." This ever-popular Chemistry professor likes Kettering students for their maturity, creativity and ability to plan and analyze. He enjoys the opportunity to interact inside and outside the classroom with what he calls "so many exceptional individuals."

His advice to prospective students is that "you cannot afford NOT to come to Kettering. A degree from Kettering is the key to success."

Hidden talents and outside interests: He doesn't brag about it, but Bell plays a wicked game of ping pong. His reputation on the table is such that Joe Spielman, former GM vice president of North America assembly and stamping operations, has returned to campus for re-matches. Bell is also willing to engage in a rousing game of bridge or talk astronomy with any and all takers.
