Community Service at Kettering

What is the SCEC?

The Student Civic Engagement Center (SCEC) is home to the community service, service-learning, philanthropic, and volunteer organizations on campus. These include: Engineers Without Borders (EWB), Green Engineering Organization (GEO), realSERVICE, and Up 'til Dawn (UTD). It also serves as the community outreach opportunities for our students, as well as for coordinating CollegeTown service activities with UMFlint, Baker College, and Mott Community College. Kettering students will staff the center under direction of the Student Life office.

Why was it established?

Student Life established the Student Civic Engagement Center to encourage and facilitate our students' commitment to social responsibility and active citizenship; cornerstones of the University's educational enterprise. Through the center, we will promote teamwork, creativity, diversity, and mutual respect through service and philanthropic experiences. Eventually, the Student Civic Engagement Center will partner with academic departments to develop a comprehensive service learning model for full integration into our scholarly community. We believe the center will advance significantly our goal of "engaging in collaborative partnerships that contribute to the well-being of our region and society."
