PeopleMeet the Director: Dr. Jacqueline El-Sayed, Director of CETL and Professor of Mechanical Engineering graduated from General Motors Institute in 1986 and has been on the faculty at Kettering University since 1996. Dr. El-Sayed earned her MSE (1989) and Ph.D. (1997) from the University of Missouri. Prior to her Kettering appointment, Jackie taught at the University of Missouri and Florida International University. Dr. El-Sayed's areas of expertise include manufacturing optimization, multi-disciplinary team teaching, pedagogy, and curriculum development. In 2001, she was the Rodes Professor with Dr. Lucy King from Manufacturing Engineering, studying the use of multi-objective optimization techniques on automatic fixturing. In 2003, Jackie, Lucy and Tony Lin received an NSF grant entitled "Vertical and Horizontal Integration of Manufacturing into Engineering Curricula", with a total budget of $425,106. Jackie became a part of the Kettering Industrial Ecology Team (KIET) which received support from NSF in 2005 in the amount of $100,000 to develop a multi disciplinary course on sustainable design and manufacturing. The KIET is currently pursuing follow up funding with other institutions. More information on this work can be found at green.kettering.edu Dr. El-Sayed was appointed in 2004 by Governor Jennifer Granholm as commissioner for the Michigan Truck Safety Commission representing all four year colleges and universities. The MTSC provides education and compliance programs to increase truck safety in Michigan. She is currently in her second elected term as chair. She also served as the Chair of the Driver's Education Advisory Committee to Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land which resulted in the recommendations incorporated into the Drivers Education Providers and Instructors Act of 2006. She then chaired the Motorcycle Safety Advisory committee also for the Michigan Department of State. In 2008-2009, Dr. El-Sayed was recognized nationally for her leadership when she was selected an American Council on Education Fellow in which she served her internship at Harvey Mudd College with her ACE mentor, President Maria Klawe. Dr. El-Sayed is currently the treasurer for the American Society of Engineering Educators, Women in Engineering Division. Dr. El-Sayed enjoys active involvement with students and is the faculty advisor for the Society of Women Engineers, Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority, and Society of Plastics Engineers.CETL Advisory Board CETL's Advisory Board includes representatives from across the Kettering Community: Kettering faculty members, members of the Kettering administration, Kettering students and external members.
