On Campus - WKUF! - November 19, 2004

Alan Delos Santos and Diane Vyvyan hold the WKUF banner.

A new voice joined the airwaves in Flint when Bulldogs started to jam Friday, Nov. 19 as WKUF-LP (W-Kettering University in Flint Low Power) FM Radio began broadcasting at 94.3 on the FM dial. Under the mottos of "Bringing unity to the Flint community" and "Where Bulldogs jam," the student-run radio station will host a national news service and feature student and community programming.

All good news to current students and some committed young alums who were instrumental in getting the initial license and FCC permission, including Jill Tebbe '01, Dave Malkan '01, Noelle Suprenant '03 and David Devine '03.

The station launch represents the culmination of many years of hard work and even harder waiting. In September of 2000, student group WKUS (a student music and DJ group) submitted an application to the FCC for a Low Power FM building permit. The first application was not accepted due to frequency issues. The group re-applied in August of 2002. The FCC accepted the application for a LPFM station in 2003 and granted a permit for construction of a radio station on campus.

The station is located in the lower level of the Campus Center Building with the transmission tower located behind the Academic Building near the corner of Third Avenue and Dupont Street.

Programming will include Pacifica Radio, a service of the Pacifica Radio Foundation, brining listeners alternative, community, free speech, listener-sponsored radio for more than 50 years, and such student-produced shows as "The Hype Show," "Shadow One" with DJ Rome and DJ Shef, "Mixed Signals" with DJ Eric Jacuzzi a.k.a. DJ E.J., and "The Uh? Show" with DJ *****.
