From left: Nick Maschino, Cidney McGee, Nick Latiano and John LaRose analyzed throughput of patients in the offices of Dr. John Tower and Dr. Mahpara Syed. The students found people more interesting to study than machines.

What is a capstone class?

The Senior Design Project is knows on campus as the capstone class and represents a culminating design experience for Industrial Engineering students. Each term, students initiate one or more projects that they complete at local industry facilities and present realistic design problems with multiple constraints. These problems require the application of current technological engineering standards.

The process of developing and completing a typical senior design project consists of 11 steps:

  • inquiring/fishing;
  • arranging exploration meeting;
  • visiting facility/understanding project;
  • written proposal/contract signed;
  • information study/providing background;
  • kick-off meeting;
  • planning/implementing various tasks (Students/Professor);
  • preliminary presentation;
  • final presentation; and
  • final report submission.
