Photonics and Fiber Optics Lab

Overview

The Photonics and Fiber Optics Lab was established primarily through the effort of Dr. Corneliu Rablau through a generous equipment donation secured from JDS Uniphase of San Jose, CA and through equipment and accessories purchased using his professional development money provided by Kettering University, as well as other funds. The funds for the renovation of the space that houses the lab were provided by the Kettering University Office of Sponsored Research. The support provided by this office is greatly appreciated. Physics Department lab managers Robert Cunningham and Gary Thieme have also provided a lot of help, their heavy lifting (literally and figuratively) is acknowledged and appreciated. Last but not least, the support provided by Dr. Bahram Roughani, the Head of the Physics Department and a strong advocate for the Photonics Lab is acknowledged and greatly appreciated.An overview of the Photonics and Fiber Optics Lab

The lab is well equipped for a wealth of optics, fiber-optics and electro-optics measurements from UV to the near IR (telecom band) part of the spectrum. The research in the lab is focused on two main areas:

Fiber optics components and devices for telecommunications and other applications. The lab features all the standard equipment found in a modern optical communications lab: fixed-wavelength and tunable lasers (1310 nm, 1550 nm band, 1600 nm), optical spectrum analyzers, optical power meters, laser diodes and laser diode drivers, standard and specialized optical fibers, fusion splicers, opto-mechanical components, etc. We are primarily interested in investigating non-telecom uses of telecom fiber-optics devices (e.g. fiber Bragg gratings as temperature, vibrations and stress sensors, other fiber sensors).

Optical techniques for materials science. We employ light scattering, optical absorption spectroscopy and other optical techniques for the investigation of ferrofluids and other materials.
